I don’t know if Ezmira is going to become so commonplace that people start referring to their mobile devices like laptops. But right now it’s certainly one of the most interesting apps I’ve seen. 

Here’s how it works. 

You download the free Ezmira app from iTunes for iOS or Android, then add your Gmail account. After logging into your Gmail by entering your username and password, you’ll see your inbox at the top left corner of the screen. Scroll down until you find the button labeled “Add Calendar, Contacts & Notes”. Under that button is another button called “Link Account”. Tap on that and you can link the Ezmira app to your various accounts such as iCloud, Facebook, Skype, Twitter, etc. 

Once you’ve linked the app, you’ll see “Your Accounts” under the main menu bar. There’s nothing else there yet but when you click on it, you’ll see your Google calendar, Dropbox, Box, Evernote (which I haven’t tried yet) and Facebook. You can also add more by clicking on the plus sign next to each item. If you want to add more than one, simply tap on the plus sign again. 

When you open a folder within the app, say Dropbox or Box, it will display the files available to you. If you have multiple folders within those services, they will show up as separate tabs. For example, I have three folders inside Dropbox – one for work related documents, one for personal photos and videos and one for music. The apps shows them as separate tabs. Clicking on any of the folders will open the files inside it on your phone. 

On the other hand, if you click on the calendar tab, it will only display events for today. If you want to view tomorrow’s calendar, double-tap on the calendar icon. Then you can scroll through the months and years. 

For example, let’s say I have a meeting scheduled for tomorrow morning and I want to check it out later. With the Ezmira app, I can pull up my calendar on my iPhone and see what time the meeting is. I can even look up directions to the location using Google Maps. 

You can also use the Ezmira app to view your contact list, emails, text messages and notes. Just tap on the name of anyone in your contact list and select the option to view their info. If you want to get rid of a contact, just swipe across their picture. This feature will not delete them from your phone’s address book, though. Instead, it will simply remove them from the contact list. 

To view your emails, just tap on the box at the bottom of the screen which says “Inbox”. Scroll through your emails and tap on any messages that are not currently marked as read. To mark them as read, just long press on the message and choose Mark as Read. Alternatively, you can just swipe across the message. If you want to reply to any email, just tap on the Reply or Send button. 

Notes are similar to emails except they are stored in Evernote. When you open the app, you’ll see your notes listed on the left side of the screen. If you want to add new notes, just tap on the + sign at the bottom of the screen. Tap on the type of note (text or image) and start typing. When you’re done, tap the Done button. 

If you want to edit an existing note, just tap on the Edit button (the pencil). If you decide you no longer need the note, just tap on the trashcan. 

Evernote is where you store your files. So whenever you save a file in Evernote, it will automatically upload to Dropbox, Box or Google Drive. The good thing about this is the files won’t take up space on your phone, so you can keep plenty of room for other things. 

But what if you want to transfer a particular file directly from your phone to your computer? Well, you can do that too. I tested this out by transferring a Word document from my phone to my Macbook Pro. All I had to do was go to the app on my phone, select the file I wanted to transfer and hit the Share button. A dialog box would pop up asking me if I wanted to send it via email or transfer it to my Dropbox account. From there, I could either pick Dropbox or just hit Next. Once I selected Dropbox, the file would pop up immediately on my desktop. 

Now, I am not sure how much of this is possible with other cloud service providers. For example, I tried linking my Dropbox account to the Ezmira app and it didn’t seem to work. Maybe someone who uses Dropbox can confirm whether or not this works. 

The last thing I did before ending my test was to switch back to my desktop and open up Safari. I clicked on the Mail link and got a popup window asking me if I wanted to add the website to my Favorites. I said yes and the site opened up. I could go ahead and add it to my reading list, too. 

While Ezmira is still fairly new, I think it has great potential. I can already imagine lots of ways I can put it to use. For example, I can set up meetings on it and if I forgot something, I can just pull up the app on my phone and quickly review the details. Or maybe I can use it as an online travel guide. Or maybe I can use it as a digital photo frame for displaying images. 

With these possibilities, the sky really seems to be the limit for Ezmira. As it stands, it’s not quite ready for primetime. But I’m willing to bet that once Apple or Google comes out with their own version (or better yet, both companies team up), we’ll see even more features added to it.
